Vision when You Have medicare

Vision coverage can look different depending on how you receive your Medicare benefits. Understanding what Medicare covers, what additional benefits may be available, and what to look for in vision coverage can help you plan for routine eye care, glasses, contacts, and other vision needs.

What Does Original Medicare Cover?

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine eye exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses. It may cover certain eye exams, tests, and treatments when they are considered medically necessary.

Medicare Supplements & Vision

Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policies generally do not include routine vision care, glasses, or contact lenses. Someone with Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement may choose to explore additional coverage for routine vision needs.

Additional Vision Coverage

Additional vision coverage may be available depending on the carrier and where you live. Some options are offered separately, while others may be packaged with dental, hearing, or other benefits. Coverage can vary for exams, frames, lenses, contacts, and provider networks.

Vision Benefits with Medicare Advantage

Some Medicare Advantage plans include additional vision benefits that Original Medicare does not provide. These benefits vary by plan and may include routine eye exams, allowances for glasses or contacts, or access to participating vision providers.

When Medicare May Cover Eye Care

Medicare does cover certain medically necessary eye services, including some screenings, testing, and treatment for eye conditions. Part B also covers one pair of standard eyeglasses or one set of contact lenses after each covered cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens.
